Hello, sweet friends!

Hope you’re having a great day! Today I’m sharing our shed makeover, and I really can’t wait for you to see the transformation! As you may know, we bought our first home about two years ago and since then we’ve been working to fix it up and make it our own. This year we’ve really been focusing on making our outdoor space workable for our family, so when we had the chance to transform our shed, we pounced at it! Want to know why? I think the photo below will sum it up better than words..

The shed needed a lot of work, and buying a new shed would be so very expensive. Our shed needed new shingles, and a few fresh coats of paint to bring it back to life – and that’s exactly what we did! Our first stop was Lowe’s, we took the whole family in-store and picked up all of the supplies we needed.

Tip: When shopping in-store, find the display (should be on an end cap). They’ve got sample shingles you can purchase for $25 – this really comes in handy if you’re not sure what shade you want. It’s also helpful to grab one and take it over to the painting section so you can see how the paint will look with them as well, just don’t forget to return it when you’re done 😉

We decided to go with Timberline® brand for the shingles, because they’re the best-selling shingle in North America, the colors are gorgeous, and they’re SO durable. If we were going to spend money on shingles, I wanted to make sure we got the best. You also know you’re making the right choice when you find out that when you install any GAF Lifetime Shingle, and at least 3 qualifying GAF accessories, you’ll automatically get a Lifetime ltd. warranty on your shingles and all qualifying GAF accessories!* Non-prorated coverage for the first 10 years*. We got super-lucky because my father-in-law used to do roofing as a side job, so he is experienced and a great person to have around for this job. And he let us use his truck to haul everything we needed home (thanks dad!).

Shingle Shopping List:
  • Underlayment: FeltBuster®
  • Starter Strip: Pro-Start™ Starter Strip Shingles
    • *Recommended but optional
  • Timberline® shingles (we used Natural Shadow®)
  • Hip and Ridge Caps:
    • TimberTex®
    • Seal-A-Ridge® Shingles
  • Nails: 1 ¼” galvanized steel roofing nails
  • Nails: 1” – 1 ¼” round plastic cap roofing nail
Tip: Our shed only had one layer of shingles previously, so we were able to install the new shingles right on top. If your shed already has two layers of shingles, don’t add a third – you’ll need to completely remove them and then install your new shingles.

As the shingles went on, the shed transformation had officially begun. Our worn-down peachy shingles were being replaced with the beautiful Timberline® shingles in Natural Shadow®. Aren’t they so great? I love that they have little flecks of other colors to make them multidimensional. GAF Roofing has a Youtube channel (and Facebook) with a TON of helpful tutorial videos, the one for Nailing Roof Shingles was really helpful! I’ll include links to all of the videos at the end of this post!

Once the new shingles were up, it was time to paint! We wanted the shed to match our home, so we chose a soft green for the shed itself, and a creamy white for the trim.

I also wanted to share a few installation videos for the GAF Shingles, because I’m a visual learner and it always helps me to see how to do something before I start. So just in case you’re like me, I’m going to drop links to some visuals.
