Reading one article about Johnson & Johnson products containing cancer-causing ingredients was enough of a reason for me to pitch every J&J product in our house. And it’s not just Johnson & Johnson either – it’s an array of brands….
“Those include Johnson’s baby lotion and bath products and Desitin for diaper rash, as well as adult skin care brands including Aveeno, Neutrogena, RoC, Clean & Clear and Lubriderm. J&J, based in New Brunswick, N.J., also makes prescription drugs and medical devices.” – Huffington Post
A friend of mine had posted this post on facebook and I just couldn’t believe it. So I did a Google search and found this and this and this and this and this… (you get the point).
I gathered my information – including the chemical names – and emailed Johnson & Johnson here.
After I received the e-mail back from them, I called. And I really wish I wouldn’t have because it was a complete waste of time. The person that I talked to on the phone (a man named Kevin) couldn’t tell me anything. In the e-mail they said they had wanted me to call so they could “provide you a thorough answer” but when I called Kevin just said that he couldn’t answer my questions.
Well, a few e-mails later – and I basically was at the same point. I simply wanted to know why these ingredients were being used when they are clearly unsafe and many other companies do NOT use them. And I was never given an answer.
Every response I was sent I was given the run-around.
So after about 5 emails back and forth – I gave up.
- Quaternium – 15 (releases formaldehyde)
- Dioxane
I’m just so thankful that my friend had posted about this issue. I would still be using Johnson & Johnson products on myself and Wyatt if I wasn’t aware of the situation. I think this was just the thing I needed to really push me to go natural with the products used in our home. Yeah, they are way more expensive – but when it comes to your family’s health – can you really afford NOT to?
I’m not too particular about being all natural, but I definitely don’t want any kind of cancer causing chemicals in ANYTHING I put on myself, let alone my baby. Thanks so much for posting this.
No problem! I just found out myself and I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of it. All moms definitely need to know this!
We are very careful about the products we use in our home and on our kids. I remember way back in cosmetology school learning about how harsh Johnson & Johnson products were and that it was just astonishing that they were being used (and made for) children! We’ve never had a J & J product in our home and won’t, until they stop using harmful chemicals.
Also.. did you know that J & J BABY shampoo will clean a car engine? True. Isn’t that gross??
I had no idea! That is soooo gross! I still can’t get over it! Yuk!
Isn’t it awful?? Totally one of the reason we switched to Shaklee. We’ll never go back!
Does Shaklee have baby products? I totally need to check it out! ๐
Thanks for giving me another reason not to buy Johnson & Johnson. They are also a corporate sponsor of Planned Parenthood, and are already on my boycott list for that.
Omigosh!! I already ditched everything J&J when I found out about “sodium lauryl sulfate” and “sodium dodecyl sulfate” being used in their body wash. That ish is bad. It was in our grownup shampoo, too! Thanks for this heads up. It’s always something!
Yuck! I’m headed off to check my bathroom closet this minute. Thanks for posting this!
I just checked our Johnson’s Natural Head-to-Toe Foaming Wash & didn’t see any of those chemicals on it’s label, so maybe their natural line is okay?
Personally, we are big fans of Earth Mama Angel Baby’s products. All natural and USDA certified organic. But we got the Johnson’s Natural with a baby shower gift, so we started using it when our EMAB wash ran out.
What a great post, thank you!

After reading Green Beauty by Julie Gabriel I realized “natural” or “organic” means nothing. We have to know dangerous ingredients and it’s not hard after you read this book. Best is still making everything yourself if you rather not spend a lot on true natural stuff!
Wow! That’s crazy! Thank you.
