Okay, folks. Let’s dig in and talk about insurance.
Why should you take your time to look over benefits with your insurance plan? Because selecting your health insurance plan is a big decision! I totally admit that I’ve never really “read” them or even wanted to until now. When someone hands me a big document the first thing I want to do is skip to the last page and sign. But since I’m a momma, I can’t do that – because there are little ones that need to be thought of.
There are so many times where I could have saved money if I would have done a little research. And it looks like I’m not alone because the 2014 Aflac Open Enrollment Survey found that 41 percent of employees spent 15 minutes or less researching their benefit options during the 2013 open enrollment. 41 percent!
Common Mistakes:
– Many people auto-enroll each year, even if they’re needs have changed.
– Some are making mistakes with insurance benefits and waste up to $750/year.
– Most people don’t understand what is and is not covered in their plan.
– 64% of people aren’t prepared for open enrollment.
Solutions:
-Take your time. Schedule it in advance if needed – just make sure you have a few hours to really dig in deep and go over everything that needs your attention.
-Look up the terms that you don’t understand.
-Arrange a meeting with a health insurance agent for some Q&A time.
-Participate in webinars, online research, etc.
In the United States, Aflac has been the number one in worksite/voluntary sales for 13 consecutive years. (Eastbridge Consulting Group, U.S. Worksite/Voluntary Sales Report. Carrier Results for 2002-2014. Avon, CT.) Aflac wants you to focus on recovery and not financial stress, because, who needs more stress these days?! Right?

Question: Do you thoroughly go over your insurance details? OR do you skim like I used to?

I hate dealing with insurance. It’s so confusing to me, so I’m glad I don’t really have to deal with it!
I really hate dealing with health insurance. We switched to my employer when I was working because we thought it was better, but turns out it was 100000x times worse, so I quit so we could switch back. It definitely pays to really read everything through. Oh, I’m sitting next to that same pack and play right now ๐
I actually have Aflac. Good stuff!
I need to dig in and find out how our insurance compares to others – thanks for the helpful information and reminder!
I am so lucky that my husband handles our insurance because I am a skimmer. Luckily for me he reads and researches. I agree it is so important to know your facts!
Aww what cuties!!
We dealt with infertility for years so I’m very familiar with every nook and cranny of our insurance plans. ๐
I had an insurance practice for nine years. It always amazed me how ignorant people were about insurance. Great post!
Having good health insurance can be so difficult. I am so grateful for the health insurance that we have.
We have and LOVE Aflac!
I used to skim over it until I became self-employed! Now I enjoy looking into the benefits since I have a lot more options!
My work uses Aflac for some things. Great company!
I’m actually the benefits administration at work and we offer Aflac. I know our employees are very happy with the coverage options and pricing.
we’ve got it and we love it! Aflac came in very handy a few years ago when my hubby was injured at work!
I haven’t have my own insurance yet, but I know it’s something I’m going to have to think about at some point.
I’ve heard about Aflac (the duck!), but have never been at a company that offered it as an option. For myself, I was born and raised a Kaiser baby, and I’ve always been happy with the quality, care, and (lack of) costs of their service. I agree, it’s definitely important to be informed in making family financial decisions.
