For some families, having access to things like food and personal care items is a daily struggle. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, over 16 million American children live in poverty. 16 million. Champions for Kids, General Mills and Unilever are joining together to help make a change by introducing the Fall Kidsโ€™ Essentials Program.

How it works:

Starting October 14th, over 1,800 participating Walmart stores will have donation bins located inside the store. Customers can purchase food and personal care items for children and place them inside the bins. All of the donations will stay in the community and be distributed in the school districts nearest to each store.

Champions for Kids, General Mills and Unilever will also be awarding school districts in each participating Walmart division that collect the most donated items. The School districts can win one of many prizes, totaling $10,000! Finalists will be highlighted on the Champions for Kids Facebook page where voters can โ€˜likeโ€™ and โ€˜shareโ€™ their favorite stories.

Also, General Mills and Unilever are sponsoring a SIMPLE Service project. SIMPLE Service projects create easy ways for people to give back to the little ones in their communities. Participants can visit CFKHelpKidsThrive.org to learn more and submit their stories for a chance to win!

So, what do you think? Isn’t it amazing when companies come together to make a difference? And whats better yet is the fact that you can help if you choose to do so. I know we’ll be dropping a few items in the bins at our local Walmart!
